E-commerce vs. a catalog site: which does your shop actually need?
Not every shop needs a full online store. Here's how to decide between selling online and showing what you have, and the middle ground most owners miss.

A shop owner asks us for “an online store” about once a week. Sometimes that's exactly right. Sometimes what they need is a great catalog, and a full store would just create work.
What each one is
A catalog site shows what you have: photos, descriptions, prices if you want, and a clear way to ask about an item or come in. No cart, no checkout, no shipping.
An e-commerce site sells: cart, checkout, payments, taxes, shipping or pickup, order notifications, returns.
Both should share the same thing underneath: one inventory list that stays accurate.
A catalog is often enough when…
- Most items are one-of-a-kind or need to be seen in person (pawn, consignment, antiques, furniture).
- Prices are negotiable or change daily.
- Your customers are local and would rather pick up than wait for shipping.
- You don't want to pack boxes.
Add a “hold this for me” button and you get most of the benefit with none of the shipping headaches.
You need full e-commerce when…
- Customers outside your town want what you sell.
- You stock repeatable items in quantity.
- You want sales while the shop is closed: evenings, holidays, the week after Thanksgiving.
- You're ready to handle fulfillment, or you have a plan for it.
The middle ground most owners miss
Run both from one back office: everything appears in the catalog, and only the items you choose can be bought online. Inventory updates the moment something sells in the store or on the site, so you never sell the same item twice.
AI helps on either path: descriptions and search snippets drafted from a photo, pricing hints against similar items, and alerts when a best-seller is running low.
Holiday timing
If you're thinking about selling online for the holidays, start in late summer. Products, photos, payments and testing all take longer than anyone expects, and you want the store live well before Black Friday, not on it.
